Packing & Storage Tips

Use only moving boxes and moving supplies. Grocery boxes and the like are simply not strong or stable enough when moving house.

Be prepared and order all your moving boxes and packing supplies in advance, so you have everything on hand when you start to pack.

Pack one room at a time. It is easier to unpack if each box only contains items from one room. This isn't always possible, particularly as you get near the end of the packing.

For heavy items like books, use smaller boxes so they are able to be lifted and carried without causing injury.

Always pack heavier items at the bottom of a box and lighter, bulky items at the top, for security and easier carrying.

As moving boxes are packed, have a central place for them to be stored until moving day. If you pack up the garage first, this makes an excellent holding area for packed boxes.

Use wardrobe boxes for the clothes that are hanging in closets. These have a bar for the hangers to go on, so they don't need to be folded and packed. When you unpack at the new house, all you have to do is hang them straight up in the closet there.

Your local post office might have special offers on shipping of standard size boxes. Many times they allow you to ship without any weight limit. Before starting to pack your boxes, call your carriers for shipping offers!
